Design and deployment of an integrated digital platform for a major pharmaceutical player in the Basel area. The solution unifies data flows from production PLC/SCADA, quality LIMS, maintenance CMMS and supply chain ERP into a single environment. Hybrid cloud architecture on Microsoft Azure with microservices, REST APIs, real-time ingestion via MQTT and OPC UA, Azure Data Lake storage, Power BI for business stakeholders and Python notebooks for data science teams. Conducted in agile mode over 18 months with around ten cross-functional teams (operations, quality, corporate IT, cloud integrator, data science, security) under stringent GxP constraints. Governance included a monthly steering committee and weekly RAID tracking.

Big Pharma, Bâle · Basel area, Switzerland · 2023-2024

Applied R&D engagement for a Big Pharma player in the Basel area. Design, validation and deployment of an AI agent able to continuously analyse process data flows (temperature, pressure, flows, product quality), spot optimization windows and automatically adjust set-points within bounds predefined by process engineering. Technical stack Python / TensorFlow / Azure ML with full MLOps (model versioning, A/B testing, drift monitoring, audit trail). Central challenge: making the agent's decisions traceable and explainable to pass GMP validation, and securing 24/7 operational reliability without human intervention during batches. The project included review by internal quality inspectors and full documentation for external audits.

Takeda · Switzerland · 2022-2024

Long-term assignment at Takeda commissioning a new pharmaceutical fill & finish production line (sterile filling, inspection, labelling, serialization). End-to-end ownership of the qualification flow: Factory Acceptance Test preparation and execution at the OEM, Site Acceptance Test in Switzerland, Installation Qualification (IQ) and Operational Qualification (OQ) up to routine production. Coordination of more than ten subcontractors and suppliers (machines, utilities, automation, quality, validation, IT). Mixed Siemens (TIA Portal, WinCC) and Rockwell (ControlLogix, FactoryTalk) stack with central SCADA integration. GAMP5 and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant documentation, ready for Swissmedic and FDA audits. The dual technical / project manager role enabled fast schedule / quality / cost trade-offs.

Sun Chemicals · Switzerland · 2023-2024

Re-design of the new raw material introduction process at Sun Chemicals, a fine chemistry player specialized in inks and pigments. The original process consumed several FTEs on manual entries across five systems (ERP, MES, quality, purchasing, safety) with an average lead time of several weeks. Solution delivered in three streams: (1) end-to-end flow mapping and re-design with business stakeholders; (2) Power BI Business Intelligence on historical data to identify bottlenecks; (3) RPA and Power Automate automation of the orchestration across the five legacy systems with exception handling and human validation focused only on value-adding steps. User documentation, team training and support plan.

Two-phase solution for a pharma site under strict confidentiality constraints (cloud LLMs not allowed). Phase 1: advanced Business Intelligence on failure history (10+ years of CMMS tickets) to identify recurring patterns, at-risk components and root causes. Phase 2: deployment of an on-premise intelligent chatbot based on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) consuming technical documentation, maintenance procedures and failure history to give technicians real-time contextual recommendations. End-to-end on-premise architecture (model, vector store, application) meeting pharmaceutical security constraints. User interface tested and co-designed with technicians to drive adoption.

Tai Van led the project and carried out the integration, testing and documentation for HVAC control changes at the Merck Serono site in Corsier-sur-Vevey. The work covered operational analysis, control changes, deployment and documentation handover within the site's regulated environment. Result: more than 30% lower energy consumption for the air handling units.
