ISA-88 and IEC 61512: what is the relationship?
ISA-88 and IEC 61512 belong to the same reference family for batch control. ISA-88 names the work and series developed through the International Society of Automation. IEC 61512 is the corresponding international series published by the International Electrotechnical Commission.
One qualification matters in September 2026: the numbers alone do not establish that two documents are identical. IEC published IEC 61512-1:2026, the second edition, on 20 February 2026. The public ISA-88 series catalogue still lists ANSI/ISA-88.00.01-2010 for Part 1. A specification should therefore identify the organisation, part, edition and year it requires.
The relationship between ISA-88 and IEC 61512
ISA explains that several series developed by its committees were submitted to IEC and became international series covering the same subjects. Its page on the relationship with IEC standards explicitly pairs IEC 61512 Batch Control with ISA-88.
In project language, “S88”, “ISA-88” and “IEC 61512” often refer to the same batch-model framework. That shorthand is insufficient for a contractual requirement or document review. The applicable part and edition need to remain explicit.
What Part 1 structures
IEC 61512-1 provides models and terminology for batch systems and procedure-oriented control. The 2026 edition clarifies relationships among recipes, recipe components and equipment control. It retains a central principle: separating recipe procedural elements from equipment procedures.
This separation describes what the process requests without locking it into one equipment implementation. It gives process, automation, production and validation teams shared terms for units, operations, phases, recipes and equipment capabilities.
The four parts of the series
| Part | Main subject |
|---|---|
| ISA-88 / IEC 61512-1 | Models and terminology |
| ISA-88 / IEC 61512-2 | Data structures and guidelines for languages |
| ISA-88 / IEC 61512-3 | General and site recipe models and representation |
| ISA-88 / IEC 61512-4 | Batch production records |
The relevant part depends on the task. Sequence decomposition normally starts with the Part 1 models. Structured recipe exchange or an electronic batch record may require the later parts.
ISA-88 and ISA-95 answer different questions
ISA-88 structures batch control, equipment, procedures and recipes. ISA-95, published internationally as IEC 62264, addresses integration between manufacturing operations and enterprise systems.
On a pharma project, ISA-88 may organise recipe execution in the batch system while ISA-95 frames exchanges among PLC/SCADA, MES, LIMS and ERP. Our guide to MES, ISA-95 and ERP/PLC integration covers that second boundary.
When an ISA-88 architecture helps
The framework provides a common baseline when designing a new batch line, revamping a legacy system, migrating PCS7 or PlantPAx, or integrating an MES. It is also relevant when every new recipe still requires a PLC program change.
Work starts from the actual installation: equipment breakdown, procedures, recipe parameters, modes, states, interlocks and interfaces. The target must remain compatible with machine capabilities and site change rules.
A “compliant with ISA-88” label does not by itself prove that an architecture is maintainable, validated or suitable for the process. Acceptance criteria, responsibilities and testing remain necessary.
Deliverables for a batch-architecture assignment
Depending on scope, the assignment may produce:
- a map of units, equipment modules and control modules;
- decomposition of procedures, operations and phases;
- recipe structure and permitted parameters;
- conventions for modes, states, alarms and interlocks;
- an interface matrix across SCADA, MES, LIMS and ERP;
- test criteria for FAT, SAT and qualification.
Vanguard Systems provides this work through its solution architecture and systems integration service. On a regulated installation, it connects with CQV qualification and validation and our pharmaceutical automation work in Switzerland.
Frequently asked questions
Does IEC 61512 correspond to ISA-88 batch control?
Yes, for the standards family and batch-control subject. A contractual requirement should still identify the part, edition and year because ISA and IEC catalogues do not always list the same edition at the same time.
Are ISA-88 and IEC 61512 strictly equivalent?
They belong to the same batch-standards lineage, but not every edition should be assumed identical. In September 2026, IEC 61512-1 is the 2026 second edition while the public ISA catalogue still lists ISA-88.00.01-2010.
Is ISA-88 mandatory in pharmaceutical manufacturing?
ISA-88 is a models and terminology standard, not a GMP regulation. Its application depends on the process, specification, QMS and contractual requirements of the site.
What is the difference between ISA-88 and ISA-95?
ISA-88 structures batch control and recipes. ISA-95 structures exchanges between manufacturing operations and enterprise systems, for example across SCADA, MES and ERP.
